Description

Introducing "The Einstein," a captivating bar-height accent table crafted from a single, thick cookie-cut slab of reclaimed Louisiana sinker cypress. This one-of-a-kind piece earns its name from the mesmerizing, convoluted grain patterns that evoke the intricate folds and structures of a human brain cross-section, blending natural artistry with intellectual flair. Measuring approximately 36 inches in height—ideal for bar or counter-level use—this round burl table features a generous, irregular live-edge top that spans roughly 30-40 inches in diameter, depending on the natural contours of the wood. The surface is meticulously polished to a smooth, satin sheen, highlighting a rich palette of warm amber, golden brown, and subtle gray tones, with swirling burl formations and concentric growth rings that tell the story of centuries-old growth. Supported by a sleek, black powder-coated metal base with elegantly curved and sculptural legs, the table combines rustic organic charm with modern industrial sophistication, making it a versatile accent for living rooms, lounges, or patios.

The wood itself, sinker cypress, originates from the ancient bald cypress forests of Louisiana's swamps and riverbeds, where massive old-growth trees were felled during the intensive logging era of the late 1800s to early 1900s. These logs, often from trees over 1,000 years old, sank to the anaerobic depths of rivers like the Mississippi and Atchafalaya, where they were naturally preserved in mud, clay, and cool water for over a century, preventing decay and enhancing their density. Today, these "sinkers" are sustainably salvaged by divers and artisans, ensuring no living trees are harmed in the process—an eco-friendly practice that promotes forest preservation and earns LEED certification points for green building projects.

What makes reclaimed Louisiana sinker cypress particularly useful is its exceptional durability and rot resistance, attributed to the natural oils like cypressene that saturate the wood, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications without the need for heavy chemical treatments. Unlike modern fast-growth cypress, these old-growth specimens boast tighter grain structures, superior strength, and unique visual character, including figured burls and vibrant color variations that develop from prolonged submersion. Historically prized for constructing boats, pirogues, and durable structures in the humid Southern climate, sinker cypress now shines in high-end furniture like "The Einstein," where its rarity and historical depth add value as a conversation piece. This table not only serves as a functional surface for drinks, books, or decor but also as a sustainable heirloom that connects modern interiors to Louisiana's rich natural heritage, offering timeless beauty and resilience for generations to come.

Why Sinker Cypress?

cypress_logging_1.jpg

In Louisiana and the Southeastern United States, cypress logs were axe-cut in the 1800’s from virgin cypress forests. They were then transported to various destinations across the country. On their journey many were lost and submerged underwater, where they acquired vibrant colors from the surrounding environment. Hence the name “Sinker Cypress.” The ultimate color of each log varies depending on pH, silt content, water movement, salinity, length of time under water, and type of environment the tree originated. Their tight grain from slow growth is unlike any other lumber in today’s growing forests.

What does live edge mean?

The primary distinction between live edge and non-live edge is that live edge wood retains its natural edges, whereas non-live edge wood has been trimmed or modified. The choice between live edge and non-live edge ultimately depends on individual taste.

Our Process

Once pulled from the bayous, milled, and dried locally to 10-12% moisture content, each slab is meticulously selected to be transformed into a functional work of art. By planing, sanding, and cutting the wood, our team of craftsmen are able to create exquisite tables, rich with a piece of Louisiana history.

Notes

This is natural wood and finished with a clear, matte coating. It provides a protective layer that makes the table scratch resistant and easy to clean. Each piece is uniquely created and one of a kind. Oak retains moisture in pockets, which can cause the wood to crack and split. Unlike other companies, Southern Wood uses a state-of-the-art vacuum kiln to dry wood and prevent this from happening. Every slab is kiln dried to 8-10% moisture content in our iDry vacuum kiln. As raw wood is used in its natural form, the table shown in the picture will slightly vary from the one purchased. Each table has its own distinct color variations and characteristics. Woods of the same species may vary in color, grain pattern, and texture. All wood slabs are typically cut at 2 ⅛”, and finish out between 1 ½” to 1 ⅝”. Natural wood may display small splits, knots, or other organic features unique to each piece. This is a real wood table, and it will react to water, humidity, and heat as well. All pictured tables are finished with a clear matte sheen, although additional sheens are available. The color of the wood in this image may vary due to lighting conditions, including natural and artificial light sources, which can alter its appearance. Actual colors may differ slightly from what is shown.
