At Southern Wood, every table is a bespoke creation, hand-selected from premium Louisiana-sourced pecan slabs and meticulously milled by our curator-artisans. The thick, solid-wood top (1.5-2 inches thick) is book-matched for balanced symmetry, showcasing the pecan's flowing grain that adds an authentic, nature-inspired look. The farmhouse trestle base elevates the design with timeless functionality: robust X-braced supports crafted from the same solid pecan, joined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery for unparalleled stability. The accompanying benches mirror the table's aesthetic, with contoured seats for comfort and sturdy leg frames that tuck away neatly. Why Pecan Wood?

Central to this table's allure is the solid pecan wood, a material deeply intertwined with Louisiana's cultural, agricultural, and natural heritage. As the only major tree nut native to North America, the pecan tree thrives in the fertile alluvial soils along Louisiana's rivers, bayous, and floodplains—from the Mississippi Delta to the Atchafalaya Basin—where it has flourished for millennia. Native American tribes, including the Choctaw and Natchez, first gathered wild pecans for food, tools, and dyes, laying the groundwork for its enduring role in Southern life. But Louisiana's true legacy with pecans began in the 19th century, when the state pioneered commercial cultivation. In 1846, Antoine, an enslaved horticulturist at Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana, achieved a horticultural breakthrough by grafting the first improved pecan variety, the "Centennial." This innovation—creating trees with larger, more uniform nuts—sparked the modern pecan industry, transforming Louisiana into a powerhouse producer. Today, pecans are the official state nut (designated in 2023), supporting thousands of jobs and contributing millions to the economy through orchards that dot the landscape, especially in parishes like Grant, Vernon, and Rapides.

Beyond its nut-bearing fame—fueling iconic treats like praline candies and pecan pies—pecan wood holds profound significance in Louisiana's craftsmanship tradition. Harvested from managed, mature trees (often after productive nut cycles), the wood is celebrated for its exceptional strength and beauty, rivaling hickory in hardness while offering a finer, more workable grain. Pecan lumber exhibits a light to medium brown heartwood with subtle reddish undertones that deepen to a warm honey-gold patina over time, accented by straight to slightly interlocked grain patterns that reveal intricate figuring: subtle chatoyance (a shimmering wave-like effect), tight growth rings, and occasional mineral streaks from the nutrient-rich river soils. This natural variation—darker in heartwood slabs from older trees, lighter in sapwood—creates a visually dynamic surface that's as unique as a fingerprint, evoking the lazy bends of a Louisiana bayou.

The wood's durability is legendary, with a Janka hardness rating of around 1,820—making it ideal for high-traffic furniture that withstands daily use, hot dishes, and the humid Southern climate without warping or cracking. Naturally resistant to insects and decay, pecan wood has been a staple in Louisiana's furniture-making heritage, from Creole armoires to Acadian rocking chairs. Early 20th-century artisans in New Orleans and Natchitoches prized it for its workability and fine finish, using it to craft pieces that reflected the agrarian spirit of plantation life. In an era of sustainability, opting for solid pecan promotes responsible forestry: Louisiana's pecan groves are often family-owned, USDA-certified operations that enhance biodiversity, prevent soil erosion along waterways, and provide habitat for wildlife like deer and songbirds. This table isn't just made from wood—it's a tribute to Louisiana's innovative spirit, from Antoine's grafts to today's eco-minded harvests, carrying forward a story of resilience and abundance.

Notes

As raw wood is used in its natural form, the table shown in the picture will slightly vary from the one purchased. This is natural wood and finished with a clear, matte coating. It provides a protective layer that makes the table scratch resistant and easy to clean. Each piece is uniquely created and one of a kind. Cypress retains moisture in pockets, which can cause the wood to crack and split. Unlike other companies, Southern Wood uses a state-of-the-art vacuum kiln to dry wood and prevent this from happening. Every slab is kiln dried to 10-12% moisture content in our iDry vacuum kiln. Each table has its own distinct color variations and characteristics. Woods of the same species may vary in color, grain pattern, and texture. All wood slabs are typically cut at 2 ⅛” and finish out between 1 ½” to 1 ⅝”. Natural wood may display small splits, knots, or other organic features unique to each piece. This is a real wood table, and it will react to water, humidity, and heat as well. All pictured tables are finished with a matte sheen, although additional sheens are available.
