Description

Crafted from Louisiana sinker cypress, the Soledad desk embodies timeless elegance and profound significance. Named "Soledad" – a moniker evoking solitude and spiritual grace – this piece also serves as a heartfelt tribute to a cherished friend. It carries a deep spiritual and emotional resonance, symbolizing quiet strength and soulful reflection, making it more than just furniture; it's a sanctuary for contemplation in any professional or personal space. The Soledad desk is a stunning live-edge piece crafted from reclaimed wood harvested from ancient logs that sank to the bottom of southern U.S. rivers and swamps over a century ago, where the waters preserved their tight grain and rich patina for generations, creating a mesmerizing contrast that seamlessly blends organic beauty with modern craftsmanship. Made from 200+ year old reclaimed wood, the desk is not only functional, but a historical piece of wood that is truly a recovered buried treasure. This wood is renowned for its durability, resistance to rot and insects, and unique aesthetic—featuring mineral-infused color variations and a warm, aged character that no modern lumber can replicate. The desktop is thick (4”), made from perfectly book-matched slabs, appearing as one single piece, with the natural, irregular edges of the log left exposed for a rustic yet elegant contrast against the modern office setting. The meticulous craftsmanship makes this desk a true work of art, inviting both admiration and conversation. These custom desks will breathe new life into your old interior and turn it into a main meeting point of your office or business. From solid wood computer desks that integrate flawlessly with your technology to modern desks with streamlined designs, the options are limitless.

The wood itself tells a story of resilience and history. Sinker cypress is reclaimed from old-growth bald cypress logs that sank to the bottoms of Louisiana's rivers and bayous during 19th-century logging operations. Submerged for over a century, these logs absorbed minerals and tannins from the water, resulting in stunning, one-of-a-kind hues ranging from warm olives and greens to subtle reds and yellows, with tight grain patterns (often 35-70 rings per inch) that enhance its durability and resistance to decay, insects, and rot. This environmentally friendly, salvaged material ensures no living trees are harmed, preserving the southeastern U.S. forests while delivering a denser, harder wood than modern cypress.

Featuring a live-edge slab top that highlights the natural contours and figured grain of the sinker cypress, Soledad measures approximately 8 feet wide, offering ample workspace for dual monitors, creative projects, or executive tasks. The surface showcases the sinker cypress’s signature beauty: a smooth, polished expanse of interlocking grain patterns in warm honey-gold tones, accented by iridescent sheens of amber, reddish-brown, and subtle grayish and blue undertones from prolonged submersion. These hues shift and shimmer under the room’s lighting, evoking the wood’s watery origins and giving it a dynamic, almost ethereal glow—far more vibrant and figured than typical wood. The live edges are rugged and organic, with gentle curves and bark remnants planed and sanded down but retaining their wild, undulating contours, adding to the piece’s one-of-a-kind appeal. Any natural knots, checks, or small voids (common in sinker cypress) are stabilized with epoxy and a clear matte overall finish for a seamless, contemporary finish, enhancing the wood’s depth without hiding its history. Supported by sturdy, angled legs in matching wood tones, it pairs beautifully with modern or rustic decor. Adorned with subtle imperfections from its watery origins, each desk is unique, inviting a sense of heritage and serenity into your environment.

Ideal for home offices, corporate suites, or as a statement piece, Soledad blends functionality with symbolism – a desk where productivity meets profound meaning.

Why Sinker Cypress?

In Louisiana and the Southeastern United States, cypress logs were axe-cut in the 1800’s from virgin cypress forests. They were then transported to various destinations across the country. On their journey many were lost and submerged underwater, where they acquired vibrant colors from the surrounding environment. Hence the name “Sinker Cypress.” The ultimate color of each log varies depending on pH, silt content, water movement, salinity, length of time under water, and type of environment the tree originated. Their tight grain from slow growth is unlike any other lumber in today’s growing forests.

What does live edge mean?

The primary distinction between live edge and non-live edge is that live edge wood retains its natural edges, whereas non-live edge wood has been trimmed or modified. The choice between live edge and non-live edge ultimately depends on individual taste.

Notes

As raw wood is used in its natural form, the table shown in the picture will slightly vary from the one purchased. This is natural wood and finished with a clear, matte coating. It provides a protective layer that makes the table scratch resistant and easy to clean. Each piece is uniquely created and one of a kind. Cypress retains moisture in pockets, which can cause the wood to crack and split. Unlike other companies, Southern Wood uses a state-of-the-art vacuum kiln to dry wood and prevent this from happening. Every slab is kiln dried to 10-12% moisture content in our iDry vacuum kiln. Each table has its own distinct color variations and characteristics. Woods of the same species may vary in color, grain pattern, and texture. All wood slabs are typically cut at 2 ⅛” and finish out between 1 ½” to 1 ⅝”. Natural wood may display small splits, knots, or other organic features unique to each piece. This is a real wood table, and it will react to water, humidity, and heat as well. All pictured tables are finished with a matte sheen, although additional sheens are available.
