SINKER CYPRESS & RECLAIMED WOOD

Welcome to Southern Wood, where we bring you an undoubtedly unique collection of solid wood furniture. We are curators and artisans of specialty wood products and furniture, focusing on sinker cypress, cypress, and reclaimed wood. Our specialty lies in our exquisite live edge tables and bar tops, handcrafted from fallen sinker cypress logs recovered from the bayous, rivers, and swamps of Southeast Louisiana. Axe-cut in the 1800’s and submerged underwater, Louisiana sinker cypress acquires vibrant colors from its surrounding environment and tight grain from slow growth, unlike any other lumber in today’s growing forests.

SINKER CYPRESS

WHY SINKER CYPRESS?

One of the primary wood species we use is Louisiana Sinker Cypress. It’s incredibly durable, historically significant, repurposed, and displays a wide variety of colors. Tight growth rings (approximately 18-35 growth rings per inch) set it apart from today's wood, and such quality is no longer available in today’s growing forest. The tight grain pattern makes the wood much more durable than typical cypress grown in today’s commercial forests. The minerals in the water where the logs rested significantly influence the wood’s ultimate color. Sinker cypress is also resistant to insects and decay.

We build various pieces ranging from barn doors to custom vent hoods, to media centers and desks. We can create any unique look, including farmhouse, modern, classic, or industrial. No matter how extreme the concept, we are passionate perfectionists that will ensure your vision becomes a reality. If you can imagine it, we will handcraft it right here in Louisiana. From the table leg material, to edge, shape, color, and inlays, we believe it’s the details combined with the beauty of the wood that make our work stand out.
